What to do right now.

These steps buy time until you reach the chair. They never replace a call.

A knocked-out tooth

Hold it by the crown, not the root. Rinse it gently and keep it in milk or inside your cheek.

Come in within the hour

Severe toothache

Rinse with warm salt water and take a painkiller you normally use. Avoid heat on your face.

Seen the same day

Swelling in the face or gums

Use a cold pack on the outside of your cheek. If swelling affects breathing, call emergency services.

Seen the same day

A broken or cracked tooth

Keep any pieces, rinse your mouth and cover sharp edges with sugar-free gum or wax.

Seen within 24 hours

A lost filling or crown

Keep the crown safe. Avoid chewing on that side and do not glue it back yourself.

Seen within 48 hours

Bleeding that will not stop

Bite firmly on a clean, damp gauze or tea bag for twenty minutes without checking.
